Where in my home can I reduce my Carbon footprint?

An infrared image of a house showing heat loss. Background:

  • Your home will be unique and will produce its own particular CARBON footprint.
  • This CARBON footprint will depend on many factors such as how well insulated it is, who lives in it, where it is located and what type of fuel is used for heating.
  • Some homes use energy which is CARBON neutral, such as energy from nuclear power or renewable energy sources such as tide or wind generated power.
  • In the UK, when houses are put up for sale they must now be ‘energy efficient’ rated. You can find out about this  here

Your task:

Visit the following websites which will tell your more about energy and your home. You will use this knowledge at the next station – MY ACTIONS.

Some UK sites

  • Energy Saving Trust
  • British Gas (if you have gas heating)
Click on the link to Energy Efficiency in the top menu to reach a page where you can calculate your efficiency rating plus find out how environmentally friendly your house is.

And some novel US websites:

Next: Travel to STATION: MY ACTIONS where you will use this information and the CARBON calculator chosen earlier to see if you can reduce your CARBON emissions. You can also branch off to other stations where you can find out about how to ‘offset’ your CARBON emissions by taking part in other activities such as ‘planting a tree’.
